Instrument assisted soft tissue mobilization (IASTM) is a manual therapy technique that stimulates the inflammatory healing response. When used with the right instrument, it can help break up scar tissue, improve mobility, and reduce pain. The procedure also enhances blood flow to the area, allowing cellular activity to increase. IASTM is a patented, non-surgical form of soft tissue mobilization. It uses specially designed stainless steel tools to gently break up scar tissue and adhesions. Although there is a lack of reliable, scientific evidence to compare the effect of IASTM to other therapeutic techniques, studies have shown that it can be effective in reducing pain and improving function. Additionally, it can be used to help treat and manage conditions such as chronic inflammation, myofascial trigger points, fibrosis, and scar tissue.

To determine the effectiveness of IASTM, reviewers reviewed 261 articles. Among the studies, seven met the inclusion criteria and were randomized controlled trials. Of these, only two studies had a specific protocol for the treatment, with one study reporting a maximum of three minutes per site and the other a total of five and eight minutes.
